Amy Carpenter
Amy’s acting career began with a 3rd grade play about dental hygiene. From that one-word role, she went on to star in a handful of high school plays. It was in college that she discovered shortform improv, becoming a member of The Charles Darwin Experience. At the 2000 Chicago Improv Festival, she saw her first longform improv show: Calendar Girls. It was love at first sight.
In 2004, The Charles Darwin Experience was asked to perform a reunion show at the Phoenix Improv Festival. Though that show was an utter train wreck, it was at that festival that Amy met the wonderful people who would later form the Torch Theatre. She began taking an improv class taught by Jose Gonzales and Bill Binder. It was in that class that she met Bri de Ruiz. The improv troupe Catorce was born.
In late 2006, JRC and Ryan Avery, the other two members of Catorce, were no longer able to remain in the troupe. Bri and Amy had a meeting at Pita Jungle to discuss the fate of the troupe. They decided Catorce was best left to history. Aware how underrepresented women are in improv in general, but how rich Phoenix is with funny, talented women, they imagined a “dream team” of Phoenix ladies. Deciding five was a perfect number, they agreed on the three women they would most like to work with: Michelle Edwards, Jacque Arend and Stacey Hanlon. Much to their delight, everyone was in. Mail Order Bride was born.
Amy is/ has been a member of: The Phoenix Neutrino Project, Galapagos, and Improvised Book Club.
When not jumping around like a goofball on stage, Amy enjoys strolling the Farmer’s Market, cooking, learning, making things, seeing live music, shopping at thrift stores, brewing beer, gardening, and conversing with interesting people.
